The Genius in the Garden !

At the monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 12, at Apeejay Surrendra office, Paul Siromoni conducted a Win Wenger exercise on 'Borrowed Genius'. Subhashree Chander reports:

The a-HA! experience - notice, when you say "a-HA", your eyes light up and the lips break into smile and it has musical note to it ! And that’s what happened to us = Paul, Tantrima, Jhimli, Sanjib, Arpita, Indrani, Sukhvinder, Aniruddha, Manish, Seema, Ila and Subhashree, at yesterday’s meeting at Apeejay. It was a delightful experience : ‘Borrowed Genius’ based on ‘Periscopic Learning' (projecting a peripheral view). We missed all those who could not make it for the meeting.

After a short introduction by Paul through a series of charts prepared by him based on Beyond Teaching and Learning : How to borrow some genius for direct use, the purpose was to tap the genius within each of us to bring in effectiveness and joy in all that we do. The methodology - experiential sharing through imagery in order to deep learn to arrive at amazingly unexpected payoffs !

Paul talked about the right brain, use of which can bring in invaluable beauty and discovery, which each of us discovered by the end of the programme. We were asked to move into pairs and with eyes closed (for full 30 minutes), Paul gave short instructions at intervals of 2 –4 minutes and took us into the journey of a beautiful Garden created by each of us with richest of details -colour, shape, sound, space, sounds, feel and smell.... stirring up sensations while describing them so much that it became real to the partner.

The bing on the water glass by Paul was the timer for the experience to stop and start off another more exquisite description.

Gradually we had the Genius join us in the garden and went into details of describing the Genius in detail to make it real for the partner, In the grand finale, we met the Genius eye to eye, ear to ear… to become the genius almost to sensory details.

Next was reliving the greatest understanding or illuminating in the lifetime memory of the Genius – the point of the greatest a-HA! Culmination with seeing the Genius in front of a full length mirror, moving back and shaking hands with the Genius for the thanksgiving. We then put back the little cellular phone to keep in contact with the Genius and he also did the same to connect with us at any time!

We then shared our experiences… here are some of them…..

"My genius was Swami Vivekananda and I became Vivekananda"
"My genius is a little imp …..prancing and waiting for me to tap him more often"
"I know I have so much more potential in me.,,..I need to discover that"

"After attending 5 days BLHP, I realize I am now able to better understand myself as a person with particular reference to my emotions, feelings. I can relate to others more effectively and be sensitive to a group/individual. The net takeway from the learning sessions have been manifold and enriching and the aspect of "co-dependence" was something which was immensely meaningful. BLHP helps to comprehend the human processes and thereby brings in bliss and happiness to a person which is so vital in all spheres of life, be it personal, social or professional."

Well, perhaps not all all ! But reviews have been very positive for the Baishakhi Event 2007 at Future Business School, Kolkata, that concluded on April 29. The new location, at 2, Ripon Street, proved to be an excellent discovery, with the right infrastructure for sustained Laboratory work. Sukhvinder Sircar kept the ISABS Kolkata Region monthly meeting enthralled on March 22 evening with her exposition on the concept of 'Chakras' of the human body, that ascend from the base of the spine to the apex of the skull.

The concept of Chakras is rooted in Indian metabiology and spirituality, but has been enthusiastically taken up for research and systematisation by Western and specifically American scholars, Sukhvinder suggested. We understood from Sukhvinder that the idea of 'Auras' that surround the body as parallel fields has received a boost from Kirlian photography, through which such fields have been clicked by cameras.

Paul and Sukhvinder conducted the 'Looking Within' retreat at Dhyan Ashram from Feb. 17 evening to Feb. 19 evening. The weekend has received rave reviews from participants. There were 9 all together, and here are a few reports:

Subhashree writes: "The 'discovery' at Dhyan Ashram - at the Milanmela building ...of the rich offerings by Paul and Sukhi - of the precious gems for each one of us to create beautiful masterpieces for ourselves and others - the "abundance " of creating abundance ...

It was so nicely and neatly giftwrapped. Each moment of having it, the joy of opening it and looking at my own life and experiences was tremendously fulfilling and worthwhile. I definitely have come to a better understanding of myself. I could make so much more connections with me and others. It was truly very satisfying. I thank both of them from the core of my heart.
I also rejoice that I have such wonderful fellow passengers in the journey of life which is full of ups and downs. The realisation of being connected to other fellow beings makes the journey very inspiring."

Vijay writes: "Really It has been a nice experience. We had a pleasent time. Every minute was fulfilling. Uptill now I was looking beyond for happiness. NOw i realise that it is not beyond but it is within me itself. I had a journey within myself. I had exceptional moments. Something which I never shared with anyone not even with my wife did come out. I am feeling quite lighter. In our daily life I rarely get such time to take a look within myself.

I got an opportunity to identify true self and how false self over shadows it and gives false and temporary happiness. I had also invited one of my friend also at Dhyan Ashram. He is also overjoyed. It was a rare experience for him also.

The natural and peaceful environment at he Ashram also made the journey within more pleasant. I learnt that If a true self triggers true self in others there is no problem. I often trigger the false self in others, and the problem starts.

This journey within shall definitely help me in improving my relations with others.

I thank all the members of the group for facilitating me on issues concerning me. Special thanks to Dearest Paul and Sukhi."

HRD guru and ISABS Founder and Past President Udai Pareek was welcomed with orchids by Secretary Subhashree Chander and addressed ISABS members at the preponed monthly meeting on October 10 evening at Siemens Ltd. Udai spoke on 'The Role of ISABS in Leadership Development'. His thoughtful words on diffusing leadership in society through process laboratories as 'crucibles for self-reflection' were heard with interest by ISABS members present, including professional members Paul, Sanjib, Kakoli, and several others, who engaged in a lively discussion with him afterwards.

ISABS Monsoon Event Comes to a Close at XIM, Bhubaneswar

Monsoon Event ended on Friday, Sept. 8, around 5.45 p.m. with a 'Closing Community' session. There were 52 participants (the original 42 + 10 more who joined the Special Lab. on 'Personal and Organisational Learning Processes (POLP)' on Sept. 6) and the 8 facilitators Kakoli, Sanjib, Paul, Snigdha, Pradeep, Rajeshwari, Vandana and Madhukar, who conducted POLP. This ISABS Community of 60 were all there till the last !

We will wait to hear from everybody about their experience, but oral feedback at the 'Closing Community' sounded pretty good ! Here are some pictures from the Event - the Party, the POLP small group, and the Closing Community.

A special thanks to DP Dash, Dean of Programmes, for his untiring efforts since June to make this Event possible and very successful !

The Monsoon Event Has Started !

9.20 a.m. on Sept. 4, 2006 - a Red Letter Day for the Region as 42 participants and 7 facilitators assemble and begin interacting at the Management Development Centre of Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, for the 'Opening Community' of the ISABS-XIMB Monsoon Event.

4 Basic Human Process Labs and 1 Advanced Lab are formed, and begin their meetings from 11 a.m. Fr. Edward McGrath, a Jesuit priest (in the smaller picture) who was a founder of ISABS in 1972 as well as a pioneer of management education at XLRI and XIM is there at the Opening Community and shares a few words of encouragement to inaugurate the Event.

ISABS Kolkata Region attends Sigmund Freud's Birth Anniversary function.

The father of psychoanalysis Dr. Sigmund Freud turned 150 this year. The newly-formed Institute of Therapy and Counselling Research and Training Centre organised a day-long seminar on 'Influence of Freudian Theory on Indian Psychology'. ISABS member Dr. Amit Basu, who is both psychiatrist and a founder-member of the new organisation, invited ISABS members to the seminar, and Sanjib, Indrani, Paul and Joyce attended. Distinguished psychoanalysts and psychiatrists spoke at the seminar in the city where Girindra Shekhar Bose, collaborating with and yet differing from Freud in important ways, founded the Indian Psychoanalytic Association in the 1920s.

Sanjib and Paul spoke briefly towards the end of the seminar. Sanjib referred to the contributions of psychoanalytic theory to the study of groups and organisations, and the enlarging of the concept of the 'unconscious' from the domain of the individual to that of groups and organisations. Paul spoke on the need for preventive and applied social psychology, of the need for working with normal people so that abnormalities do not develop and people remain healthy.

Freud was the "last titan" of the great Western Enlightenment that started with Galileo and Copernicus, the first true psychotherapist who showed the way towards easing of neurotic pain and made the weight of repression lighter for hundreds who came to him. His influence on philosophy, literature, intellectual and even popular culture in the West was immense. This painting by Andy Warhol is an example.

Participation Hits All-time High !

The ISABS Kolkata Region Spring Event 2006 came to a close on Wednesday, April 12, evening at 6.30 p.m. at Bengal Chambers on Russel Street.

I am sure we will have messages from participants on how they experienced the Event. I would like to provide some information here.

We had 3 BLHPs and 1 ALHP. There were 29 participants in the 3 BLHPs, and 5 participants in the 1 ALHP. The total of 34 is exactly double the no. of participants (17) at the Baishakhi Event at XLRI, Jamshedpur, in May 2005. The increased response is most encouraging ! Its also the highest in Region history right from the time of inception in 1991.

Participants were from many sectors: corporate, NGOs, teachers, consultants, research students, etc.

ALHP was held after a very long time. A heartening development was the keenness of several ALHP participants to go on to join the Professional Development Programme at the national event.

The facilitators were Paul Siromoni, Sanjib Basu, Somali Gupta (all BLHPs) and Sukhvinder Sircar (ALHP).

We had 3 Community Sessions, opening, middle, and closing. There was a relaxed closing party immediately after the Event organised by the participants themselves. During the event, facilitators had their clinicing sessions every evening, and also a 'happy-hour-and-half' over dinner on the penultimate evening at Kwality's across the road !

A special word of many thanks to the facilitators Paul, Sukhvinder and Somali, who came all the way from Bhilai. I want to recognise them and all the other team members who helped to organise and manage the Event : particularly Arpita Mukherjee, our Secretary, for her sustained engagement and involvement, and also Chandrima Banerjee, our Dean of Programmes, Vijay Aggarwal, who arranged for the printing of the brochures and the Event bag, Kabir Mohammad, our Treasurer, and Sreyashi Deb and Anjan Chakravarti for pitching in with assistance when requested. Many others also helped with the circulation of brochures and ensuring the higher response this time.

The momentum for this Event was initiated in the 1-day 'Renewal for Transformation' retreat in February at Dhyan Ashram, conducted by Sukhvinder and Anjan. The involvement of many members and their feelings of ownership of the common purpose have been the formula of our success, from my own vantage point of view.

If, as I expect, all goes well, our next Event would be later in the year, September or thereabouts.

Nature moves in cycles. Just as day follows night, work follows rest. Seventeen of us met at the delightful 'Tamarind' restaurant on Sarat Bose Road on August 29 evening to bid farewell to our dear friend Dr. N. Annamalai ("Anna" to all) and Mrs. Annamalai who were moving to Chennai after more than three decades in Kolkata ! It was a relaxed, fun evening with music, songs, games and jokes, nostalgia and good dining ! Anna has been Treasurer and Librarian in the Region, a keen participant in all our activities, alongside his busy professional career as Trainer, mainly in Creativity. Anna will be greatly missed. We all wish him and Mrs. Anna well, and hope to see them again when they revisit Kolkata or when we drop in to Chennai !

* All participants were encouraged to share their views in which the following emerged
1) Knowledge for concious analysis of facts and resolving organizational dynamics
2) Removing individual bias while assessing competence in assessment centres
The discussion evolved out of a real case in one of the organizations where an employee
had moved up in the ranks and had become a branch head. This led to a lot of negative
grapevine, plagurism in the organization as employees were still eyeing the Boss as a
continuation of his earlier role. The person concerned was also uneasy in the intricacies of
his new role and was maintaining a stiff upper lip in his dealings.

Our next meeting at 'Young Horizons School' at 55A, Shakespeare Sarani, Opposite Trimurti Petrol Pump, on Thursday, May 19 evening at 6.15 p.m.

We will be joined by Smt. Kakoli Saha, our colleague and Professional Member, ISABS, visiting from Ahmedabad. Kakoli, who is an experienced HRD professional, would be speaking to us on 'Application of Behavioural Science in Organisations'.

We will also be discussing our Region's plans for the months ahead, and spending some time for us to share individually any thoughts and feelings that we would like to.

Baishakhi Event 2005 concluded at XLRI, Jamshedpur, at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday, May 1.

Participants gave positive feedback, and facilitators also expressed their satisfaction. There were two Basic Laboratories in Human Process (BLHP) at the Event. One was facilitated by Sanjib Basu with Snigdha Pattnaik as the co-facilitator, and the other was facilitated by Paul Siromoni with N. Annamalai as the process observer. The 2 BLHPs had 9 and 8 participants respectively, adding up to a small community of 21, including the 4 from ISABS.

Although we had hoped for a greater participation from the Jamshedpur area, and that indeed was a major objective in locating the Event there, we had only 3 local participants. Interestingly, the 17 participants came from unexpectedly varied places : Mumbai (1), Raigarh, Chattisgarh (2), New Delhi (2), Chennai (1), Coimbatore (1), Guwahati (1), Kaula Lampur, Malaysia (1), Behrampur, Orissa (1), Kolkata (4), and Jamshedpur (3). Two aspects need attention for the future: (a) the low participation, especially in relation to the considerable investment of planning and energy; and (b) the low representation from the immediate region, that we saw in the Bhubaneswar Event also, and, by contrast, the geographical spread of participants.

In addition to many small group and three large group (community) sessions, we had a Sunrise and a Sunset Seminar. N. Annamalai spoke on ‘Blocks to Creativity’ one morning and Madhukar Shukla spoke on ‘Human Process in Organisations’ in the evening. There was also a party on April 30 evening with much music, song and merriment ! The facilitators and process observer had their ‘Happy Hour’ on April 28 evening, joined by Madhukar.

Many thanks are due to Shakila Ahmed and Chandrima Banerjee for their efforts as Joint Deans of Programmes for the ground-work from Kolkata, and to Madhukar Shukla for his invaluable help and support from XLRI, Jamshedpur, as the Professional Member-in-residence. We must sincerely thank XLRI, including the Director Fr. Casimir Raj and members of the staff, for the cooperation and hospitality they provided in a very green and peaceful environment conducive to the work of the Laboratories. N. Annamalai was the Event Manager, and worked tirelessly to keep the engine running smoothly and successfully, in addition to his process observation role in the BLHP. Paul, Snigdha and I did our bit also as the facilitators. Thank you, Anna, Paul and Snigdha !

Human Process Laboratories from April 27 to May 1, 2005, at Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur

Basic Laboratory on Human Processes (BLHP) - 5 days

Objective: To enable the participant to

become aware of his/her patterns of behaviour and its impact on others;

improve his/her effectiveness in interpersonal interactions and derive greater satisfaction from them;

recognise feelings, diagnose needs and improve his/her ability to deal with conflict; and

discover his/her potential to live life meaning fully and effectively.

For Whom: The Laboratory is meant for any person interested in developing his/her personal and interpersonal competence. Personnel, HRD and training professionals, executives in different functional areas, students, doctors, lawyers and other professionals who work with people, faculty in Management, psychology, sociology and social work, university and school teachers and persons in rural development, voluntary and social service organisations are some of the people who typically attend this programme.

Advanced Laboratory on Human Processes (ALHP) - 5 days

Objective: To enable the participant to

enhance learning and experimentation initiated by him/her in the Basic Laboratory on Human Processes;

develop greater awareness of behavioural processes associated with his/her life and work on dilemmas faced in the context of perceived realities; and

practise skills of observation of human processes and interventions.

For Whom: Individuals who have participated in a Basic Laboratory in Human Processes or its equivalent (L-Group/Human Relations programmes in laboratory mode, etc.)

Programme Details

Dates: April 27 to May 1, 2005

Venue: MDP Centre, Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur

Facilitators: Facilitators for all the Human Process Laboratories will be drawn from the Professional Members of the Indian Society for Applied Behavioural Science. Co-facilitators may include Interns and other participants in the advanced Phases of the Society's Professional Development Programme.

Fee:

Corporate (AC single room) : Rs. 13,000/=

Corporate (AC twin-sharing room) : Rs. 10,500/=

NGOs/Educational Institutes/Self-sponsored (AC twin-sharing room) : Rs. 5,500/=

The programme is residential. Fee includes participation in the Laboratory, morning tea, breakfast, mid-morning tea/coffee, lunch, mid-afternoon tea/coffee, dinner, and room accommodation. All other expenses incurred by the participant would be to his/her own account, and would have to be settled directly before departure.

Applications: Applications will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. Last date: April 17, 2005. Please note that your application will be registered and confirmed by us only on receipt of your application form with programme fees in full. Your early response would help us plan the event better. Any cancellation after the confirmation of applications will entail a deduction of 25% of the programme fee towards administrative costs incurred by us. Cheques/DDs should be drawn in favour of "Indian Society for Applied Behavioural Science, Calcutta Region" payable on Kolkata.

Timings: The Laboratories will commence at 9.30 am on April 27, and close on May 1 at 5.00 pm. Participants may choose to arrive at XLRI MDP Residence in the evening of April 26.

CAUTION: A person who has experienced continuous mental stress or has been under psychiatric treatment or has a history of mental disorders, or has had a coronary or heart attack(s), must not be nominated to or join the BLHP and ALHP Laboratories. ISABS will not be responsible for any of such problems’ developed during or after participation in any ISABS Laboratory. It is implicit that each participant joins the Laboratory with informed voluntary consent and owns responsibility for his or her own health.

Weekend Lab

With great pleasure we would like to inform you about our forthcoming ISABS, Kolkata Region Weekend Laboratory at Dhyan Ashram, Kolkata. Since quite some time we were discussing, during our monthly meetings, about the possibilities of organising such a short duration lab and many of us were very keen to join such a lab. Finally, we have been able to organise this lab for our members.

Dates : 1st April 2005 (late evening ) to 3rd April 2005 (evening). This is a residential event.

Venue : Dhyan Ashram, Diamond Harbour Road (to the left beyond IIM Calcutta, Joka).

Timing : Participants are requested to arrive at Dhyanashram by 7.00 p.m. on 1st April. Dinner will be served at around 8 p.m. but not after 8.30 p.m.! We will have a preliminary session from 9 to 10.30 p.m.

The lab will commence at 9.30 am on 2nd April and close at 6 p.m. on 3rd April.

Objective : The objective of this Weekend Lab is for participants to explore personal locations within a group setting in a 2 day facilitated, largely unstructured setting.

For Whom : Existing members of ISABS Kolkata Region, preferably but not necessarily with BLHP experience.

Facilitator : Ms. Sukhvinder Sircar, Professional Member of ISABS.

Fee : Rs. 500/- per participant. This includes participation fee, accommodation (on a twin sharing basis) and food.

This will give us an opportunity to continue our journey of self exploration. Would request all of you to kindly join the lab. Needless to say, the success of this effort will depend on the extent of our participation. Let us all come together and make it a meaningful learning experience!
